To Gain Peace of Mind is to Gain Everything

It’s another day spent at home for me, and I am here for it! I really love to be at home. I am a homebody.

I usually start off my day with prayer and reading time. This really helps me to begin on the right foot.

I read a quote this morning that really resonated with me, and I wanted to share it with you all. Maybe you will find it helpful as well.

A person who has gained peace of mind has gained everything. To obtain peace of mind, you need to be at peace with the people in your environment. You need to be at peace with yourself, with your emotions and desires. Furthermore, you need to be at peace with your Creator.

Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe (1914-2005)

Wow, this is a lot to think about.

I think the rabbi is right. So often our happiness and peace doesn’t stem from the events going on around us, but from within our mind. Once we recognize this and decide to take steps to make our mind peaceful, then life will improve pretty quickly.

First of all, we need to be at peace with the people in our environment. One way to do this is to recognize that people are separate from their actions. For example, if I’m having a bad day I might snap at my husband. While my rudeness was wrong, does it define who I am as a person? No. While I’m not suggesting you should subject yourself to abusive behavior, recognizing that a person’s faults are not who they are can help you feel more at peace. Underneath our actions are people of value. And if a person in your environment is causing you duress, then it is a good idea to respectfully remove yourself.

Secondly, we need to be at peace with ourselves, our emotions, and our desires. We don’t need to compare ourselves with others, and instead, realize that we are who we are for a reason. If our emotions and desires are not peaceful, then perhaps we should reevaluate them. A lot of times we get upset over things that we have no control over whatsoever. This is definitely not helpful to our peace of mind.

Finally, we should be at peace with our Creator. I think this is best accomplished by living a life of virtue, and by taking care of the creation, both living and nonliving. To me, there is nothing that brings me peace of mind quite like spending time tending to my family and home. Doing that outdoors is a huge bonus!

Thank you so much for stopping by today, friends. I hope you have a wonderful day!
