Character Building Curriculum

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.  Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.  Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Colossians 3:12-15 (NLT)

Homeschooling is a wonderful way to support character growth in your children.  At the beginning of our homeschooling journey, character curriculum was one of the first things to be cut if we were running short on time.  It is now the last thing to go, since over time I’ve realized how crucial it is to our children’s development.  Raising preteen girls is no easy task!  At a recent homeschool convention, I focused on discovering character building curriculum that is new to our family.  I would love to share my discoveries (and a few old favorites) with you!

As a whole, my greatest finds were from either Rod and Staff Publications, or Christian Light Education. These are Mennonite organizations who share the same biblical worldview as our family to a great degree.

Rod and Staff Publications

*I am pre-reading this at the moment, and so far it is excellent.  I wish I had this resource as a teenager!*

Young Man, Be Strong!

Missionary Stories with the Millers

Growing with the Millers

Wisdom with the Millers with Working with Wisdom Companion Guide

Character Companion for the Miller Family Series

New Testament Bible Verse Mottoes for Christian Homes and Classrooms

(These books are wonderful for coloring with your daughters.  They are easily reproducible for your own family’s use.)

NT Bible Mottoes Cover

I also highly recommend Christian Light Education’s reading curriculum and accompanying Light Units for Character development.  They are excellent!

Other Resources

Managers of Their Homes

Managers of Their Schools

Managers of Their Chores

(The three references above can be found at  These books are a fantastic resource for moms!)

Lessons in Responsibility for Boys from the Christian Gentleman’s Series

Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends found at

Resources that I’ve heard good things about, but have not purchased

Character First!  curriculum found at

Hopefully this list is encouraging to you.  Character formation is so very important in our children, and is something that we must diligently teach as mothers.  Are there any other character-based curriculum or books that have worked for your family?
