Vocabulary Word Scavenger Hunt

Once we “officially” begin homeschooling again after a short break, two of my kiddos will be using Apologia’s Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day Text, Notebook, and Junior Notebook.

Since we will be visiting the beach soon, and to create excitement about their upcoming science course, I decided to put together a sea life vocabulary word scavenger hunt!  This was super easy and can be accomplished while using literally any words.

First I brought sea life pictures that I had purchased at The School Box several years ago out of storage.  These cards had the picture and word printed on them, but simply a picture will do.  Think flashcards or create your own by gluing magazine (or even family) photos onto cardstock.

Next write the word or name of each photo onto an index card.  I purchased a pack of 100 at Walmart for $0.50.  Hide the pictures, and go over the word cards with your kids.  Once they have a handle on the words, give the same amount of words to each child to find.  They could even break into teams.

Our scavenger hunt was outdoors, but this can be done anywhere.

This was such a simple activity, but my kids had a blast!  Growing vocabulary knowledge and usage in our children will help them for the rest of their life.

  1. I admire you for taking on the task of educating your children. Something that was almost unheard of when my own kids were growing up. Kudos to you! Thanks for linking up with Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop. We are so glad you came.
