Holiness does not consist in doing extraordinary things. It consists in accepting, with a smile, what Jesus sends us. It consists in accepting and following the will of God.
How many of you have dreamed about doing something extraordinary? (I’m raising my hand over here.) When I was younger, that’s really all I thought about. I was groomed to believe that “extraordinary” was a special realm outside of one’s family. Many of you probably can relate!
And then I started having babies. As soon as my first child was born when I was 19, I decided that I wanted at least four children. Having a child was amazing! Why hadn’t anyone told me this before? She was my world, but I struggled to hold onto relationships since many of my friends were not in the same place as I. It was hard! I remember feeling incredibly judged during that time of my life, but looking back I wouldn’t change a thing. One time while on vacation a little girl approached me at the pool to let me know that her mommy said I was too young to have a baby. While I wanted to reply, “Obviously not!,” I smiled and went on my way.
I continued to have my sweet babies. And as I grew, my relationship with the Lord was strengthened. It was then that I learned so much about God and His view of “extraordinary.” Following His will is what He asks of us, and it is as simple as that. I learned about His view of children, and my spirit was amazed once I realized that the heart I had for expanding my family didn’t misalign with His Word, although many people thought I had lost all “common sense,” ha!
Jesus sends us many things. Sometimes He sends us trials to strengthen our faith and for our good. Sometimes He sends us people, relationships, jobs, and missions opportunities. And sometimes, God sends us children! A few amazing verses to consider are Psalm 113:9, Psalm 127:3-5, and Psalm 139:13-16. In James 1:17 we are told, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” Revelation 4:11 says, “Worthy are you, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.” If you are expecting a child, or have a child, you can be reassured that it is by God’s will that they are here! A baby is never a mistake in God’s eyes, and they are sometimes gifted to us to bring light and hope to an otherwise troubling situation.
Going back to Mother Teresa’s words above, we would do well to consider if we are accepting with a smile what Jesus sends us. Do we accept our children with a smile? Right now I have a one-year-old snuggled into my side and I’m expecting my eighth baby. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed. More than anything, I want to be enough for my children. But then I remember that it is God who gives us strength if we rely on Him. And He is the One who has chosen each one of us to mother our specific children!
At this point in my life, I’ve pretty much come full circle. Now instead of being told that I am too young to have children, I am told that I am too old to have children. Now instead of an insult, I almost take it as a compliment as I go along my way, so very thankful for the blessings the Lord has given to me. Truly, I don’t deserve His mercy and grace.
This isn’t to say that God’s plans for each of us includes a large family, or a family at all. Not in the least! But dear momma, if you have children or are expecting, please remember that God chose you to receive this gift for a reason, which is sometimes beyond our own understanding. When we accept what He sends us with a smile…with a truly grateful heart…we become more like Him. We become more holy. Today I’m praising God for His goodness and grace!
