When I walked towards the checkout line I noticed her. Her long hair was coiled into a bun at the nape of her neck, peaking out from underneath a wide band of fabric secured behind her ears. Her skirt nearly swept the floor, and a subdued tshirt sat underneath a satchel that hung from her shoulder. Her face was scrubbed clean, and I caught a glimpse of a smile dance in her eyes before she placed her newly-bagged purchases in her cart and went on her way.
I was instantly intrigued. While I was a Christian, at the time, I totally fit in amongst the throng of shoppers surrounding me. And while I couldn’t be certain that this young woman was a sister in Christ, I felt more than an inkling that she was.
She was different. She was set apart.
While the very definition of modesty includes not drawing attention to oneself, this modest woman seemed to be doing just that in a sea of skinny jeans. But looking closer, you could see her gentle spirit shining from beneath her attire. Her body had been covered in a way to respect her God, herself, her current or future husband, and the people surrounding her.
There are so many verses throughout scripture that talk about the Lord being our covering. In Ezekial 16:8 we read,
“Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, you were at the time for love; so I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I also swore to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became Mine,” declares the Lord God.”
Here we see a picture of God as our protector or covering, in a marriage analogy. Here, the Lord used His skirt to cover our nakedness. When our hearts are hidden in Christ, we are protected from much of the sin in the world. Likewise, covering our bodies appropriately is a way God ordained to protect ourselves from so many evils of the world.
Dressing modestly is away to bring glory to God, while simultaneously diverting many lustful thoughts of others. Our good works will shine through all the more if our bodies are not a distraction.
While of course I’m not saying that we should all dress as the woman I described at the beginning of this article, we would do well to seek God’s best each day as we get dressed in the morning. While being blessed shouldn’t be our motivation, He will bless us for it.
Heavenly Father, You are so good to have shown us that You are our covering through Your Word. Help us to choose our attire carefully, while keeping in mind that we are Your daughters, and that You wish to protect us and keep us safe. Help us to be a people set apart for You, both inwardly and outwardly. Amen.
