Essential Oils that May be Applied Undiluted

Essential oils are strong stuff!  For almost all dermal applications (applications on the skin) diluting the oil with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil is the safest bet.

Essential oils are lipofilic, which means they LOVE oil.  They are easily absorbed into the skin, and over time is you apply an oil undiluted (or “neat”), then your body might eventually become sensitized to the oil and develop an allergic reaction whenever it is applied.

We don’t want that to happen!  I love my oils, and I would hate to have to part with one.

However, at times, it can be appropriate to apply mild undiluted essential oils to the skin (not internally) when addressing localized issues.  Some of these oils include:

  • Bay Laurel can be applied over the lymph nodes.
  • German Chamomile can be dabbed on inflamed spots for fast action.
  • Lavender can be used on insect bites, or on the neck for relaxation.
  • Neroli can ease anxiety.
  • Peppermint can be sparsely applied to dull injuries.
  • Tea Tree can be applied to scrapes or skin blemishes.
  • Ylang-Ylang can be dispersed over the heart area to calm.  A drop or two should do.

While it might be fine to apply these oils undiluted from time to time, dilution is still normally the way to go.
