My oldest daughter is a senior this year. A senior! I can hardly believe it.
Time has passed by much too quickly.
Looking back, I often wonder if I have done enough. There have been seasons when our to-do list never seemed to get done.
But frankly, all I need to do is look at her to realize that she has been well equipped though her homeschool journey. She is smart. She reads and writes like nobody’s business. She has passed a CLEP test, and already has three credit hours of college credit under her belt.
We most definitely would not consider ourselves to be unschoolers, but I truly believe that slow and steady wins the race.
Our children do not need the jam-packed public school schedule to succeed. If a topic comes easy to one of my children, we breeze through it. No extra busy work created for the classroom setting is necessary.
If a child is taking a long time for reading to click, no problem. I’ve learned it will come with time.
A steady stream of books is important to my children’s diet once they learn to enjoy it. This time of reading this encourages them to learn about new interests on their own.
To the new homeschooling mama, you’ve got this. As long as you care about your children and give them opportunities to learn while holding them accountable, they will succeed. Slow and steady has worked wonders for us. Children flourish when they are no longer under pressure, and can simply learn along side of you.
Home can (and in many cases should) look like home, and not a recreation of school. The home environment wraps a feeling of love around our children that a classroom never could.
If you haven’t read The Unhurried Homeschooler by Durenda Wilson, I highly recommend it. It is an easy read found on Amazon, and is very encouraging to the mamas who feel like they must measure their children’s home education experience to their peers around them.
Many blessings as you embark or continue on your home school journey!
