While in Bible Study earlier today, I began to reflect on Romans 12:2. It is a verse that is read pretty commonly, I believe.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
I wondered, is my home conformed to the world? I certainly hope not, and yet I know that in many ways it is.
Over the last month or so, I’ve begun to rethink clothing choices, and we’ve stopped accumulating character (like Disney or Nickelodeon) items for our kids. These things may seem like silly externals, but they symbolize more than that. My heart has experienced a change. I really want to serve God more than ever before.
Reading the Bible transforms our minds, mamas. And the more that I lay at Jesus’ feet, the more our home changes.
As moms, I believe that we must be on constant watch over our homes. This is one of the reasons why it is so important that we don’t take outside jobs. We must check all that we do against God’s Word, or else subtle things will make their way in. (As a side note, even when we do this, we will still experience problems at times due to our wicked and deceitful hearts. I’m so thankful for God’s grace for the times when I fall!)
Scripture teaches that as our minds our renewed and we test all things, it is then when we will discern what the will of God is. If our homes look like the rest of the homes around us, than there is a problem. If we are participating in the same traditions and customs, than there is likely a problem. Our homes should look and feel distinctly different from those who do not follow Jesus.
The path to life is narrow, but it is well worth the walk. Change is inevitable as we follow our Savior.
I’d like to share a photo that I recently made with Instagram, sharing my “Top 9” photos of the year.
This year has been messy and hard. My life doesn’t look like about half of these pictures any longer. I’ve toned down my hair, make up, selfies, you name it, ha! We’ve totally changed our spending habits. But this is the road the Lord has me on. We are to die to self, right? This is where I am right now, and while hard, I know it is the best place to be.
I hope you are encouraged to take a look at your homes, and perhaps change a few things if they are conformed to the world. Blessings!
