I woke up this morning to overcast skies, and children excited to attend their violin lesson. As I’ve grown older, I just love rain. It is such a cozy feeling to wake up to. It’s a good day to have a good day, isn’t it?
Today I would like to talk a few minutes about the short chapters 3 and 4 in “Let Me Be A Woman” by Elisabeth Elliot. Reading a little bit from this book each week is helping me to focus on what true womanhood really is, and I’ve been thinking and praying about what the Father wants my life to look like as His daughter. So let’s dive in, shall we?
The third chapter/devotional is titled, “Where to Hang Your Soul.” Like Elisabeth, when it comes to the things of God I often let my own feelings get into the way of my devotion to Him. When we worship, it is easy to let our minds wander. I really like what Elisabeth says about this…”But worship is not a feeling. Worship is not an experience. Worship is an act, and this takes discipline. We are to worship ‘in spirit and in truth.’ Never mind about feelings. We are to worship in spite of them.”
This encouraged me to view worship as an offering to Him, instead of wondering what I can get out of the deal. So often as ladies we are searching for an “experience” while we worship, instead of wholly focusing on Him and on what He wants us to do. Worshiping in the right way will lead us to the type of devotion the Lord hopes for us to have for Him as His daughters.
Chapter four is titled, “A Daughter, Not a Son.” Elisabeth and her first husband had hoped for a son while she was expecting. They felt this to be logical for a first born. Well, they ended up having a daughter, Valerie, whom this book is written to. They then realized that, “It was God who had given you to us, God to whom our prayers for a son had been made, and God who knew reasons we did not then know that made His choice far better.”
Yes, we serve a God who controls both the big and little things in our life. He definitely is the one to chooses what gender our children are, and what gender we are. We can rest in that, knowing that He doesn’t make mistakes.
Elisabeth says, “We sometimes hear the expression, ‘the accident of sex,’ as though one’s being a man or a woman were a triviality. It is very far from being a triviality. It is our nature. It is the modality under which we live all our lives; it is what you and I are called to be – called by God, this God who is in charge. It is our destiny, planned, ordained, fulfilled,by an all-wise, all-powerful, all-loving Lord.”
Amen to that. When we walk in our roles as women, we are fulfilling the destiny that the Lord has planned for us. It is a blessing and joy to do so.
Feel free to chime in below. I’m off to prepare fish and bread for supper, and after violin lessons I’ll be working on a sweet tea party set ordered from my etsy shop. I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!
