Taking care of our bodies is hard sometimes. As wives and mamas, we are usually busy. And when we aren’t busy, resting seems awfully nice. Can you relate?
I have been growing or nursing babies for 21 years now. During these phases, I usually stay hungry. It is difficult for me to really concentrate on taking care of myself.
But lately, the Holy Spirit has been convicting me of this. My body is His temple, and it honestly doesn’t belong to myself anymore. I should be fueling it with nutritious food and getting plenty of exercise. I want my body to run efficiently so I can serve both God and others well. I truly believe this is important.
Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that the Ruach Elohim dwells among you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 TLV
So about a week or two ago, I decided to start fresh. I wasn’t eating terribly, but my portion sizes have been too large. I’ve also not really been exercising.
Starting slowly, I’ve decided to cut my portion sizes and walk several times a week. Baby steps.
I was getting in pretty good shape before I was expecting Moses by following the guidelines in the book How Not to Die by Michael Greger. I completely cut out meat, milk, and most cheese. I still ate eggs. At first it was hard, but after a couple of months I felt so great. My hair and skin looked fabulous, and I finally felt like I was treating my body like I should.
But after I became pregnant, cravings kicked in full force! Within a few weeks I was eating meat and sweets again. Overall, I gained less weight over the course of the pregnancy than normal, though.
After I had Moses I cut back to eating meat only once or twice a week, but I still ate breads and sweets excessively. I’m working on cutting way back on those things and adding in more fruits and vegetables. I don’t count calories, and I don’t want to follow a complicated meal plan strategy. I hope to concentrate on making life-long changes that are easy to stick to.
And I can tell a difference! I’m not really concerned about a number on the scale, but rather want to be fit. With the Lord’s help, I hope to get there within six months or so.
We need the Lord’s help in all things, don’t we? It is by His help alone that I can do, well, anything. I definitely need His help and strength to make right choices when it comes to my health.
I believe so many diseases in our society are brought on by bad eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. I don’t want to go there if I can help it!
Taking care of ourselves, because we are God’s, is important. Are any of you on this journey also? With His help, we can do this! I will be back on Friday to talk more about our Let Me be a Woman study. I hope to see you there.
