The Proverbs 31 Woman. She is “someone” we all aspire to, most likely. Of course, none of us will ever be the ideal woman, and I don’t think Proverbs 31 expects us to be. Instead, I believe the Lord gives us this chapter to give us women a better Way that we should prayerfully consider. When we commit our ways to Him, we will be sanctified more and more each day.
I thought it would be nice to go through this chapter verse by verse on the blog, as time allows. There are so many nuggets and gems within this chapter. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by it. It is helpful to remember that the Lord meets us where we are, and will give us a change of heart as we continually commit our lives to Him.
The Proverbs 31 woman is a blessing to those around her. Her husband is thankful for her, and her children call her blessed. There are days when I definitely do not fall into this category. But I’m so thankful for the grace of God that will teach us and train us in godliness when we inevitably fail. He is so good to us.
Verse 10 of Proverbs 31 says, “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” Even during Biblical times, this woman was hard to find. There are many women who are self seeking…who want to do things there own way. This is something I struggle with at times. It is so very easy to let our sin nature slip in, and think about ourselves before we think of others.
But a woman who is considered virtuous doesn’t think this way. She values what God values, and in turn, others value her highly. Her price is far above rubies.
The Hebrew word for virtuous in this verse is chayil, which means strength, might, efficiency, wealth, force. The virtuous woman is strong, mighty, efficient, and a force for good. She knows and understands that her strength comes from the Lord.
By how we live, we can be prized possessions to our husbands. A virtuous woman takes the choices before her to the Lord in prayer, and acts according to His will. A godly husband will find so much value in that. He will be grateful for his wife, and for her actions.

A virtuous woman is also a jewel to an ungodly husband. Her actions bring him good all of the days of his life. Even though he will not understand the reason for the hope within her, he will enjoy the benefits of having a virtuous woman as his wife. As a bonus, her actions might be used to draw him to the Lord.
A virtuous woman will understand that stress causes emotional turmoil, and will bring her cares to the Lord, instead of holding on to them. Oh, how I need the Lord to help me with this!
I am so very grateful for my husband who accepts me, faults and all. But I do not want to remain in any of my sins! Stress and emotional turmoil is a big one for me. I need to continually lay this at the feet of Christ, and trust that all will be well because He is ultimately in control.
Thoughts to ponder…the virtuous woman is hard to find, and is very valuable. Friends, we can be this woman! The first step is turning to the Scriptures, and following them. We must ask the Lord to change our hearts, and for His Ways to become our desires.
